How to grocery shop to save time and money

“Americans spend an average of 46 minutes grocery shopping per trip” (USDA).

That’s too long, in my opinion. I want to get in and get out afap (as fast as possible). But, I also don’t want it to always be a dread. So here are a few ways to make navigating the grocery store easier, more efficient and more enjoyable:

  • Always plan your meals and then make your list accordingly. This way you will stick to the list and you won’t forget what you actually need.

  • Make your list according to the grocery store you’re going to shop at. For example, I write my list with the produce first because that’s where I start in my local store.

  • I’m sure you’ve heard this one before: try not to shop while hungry….this leads to compulsory purchases. I always keep a snack in my purse, like beef jerky, so that I can at least have some protein while I’m running errands.

  • Make it enjoyable for yourself…listen to a podcast, music, or sip on your favorite beverage (is wine allowed?….just kidding!).

  • Shop at lower traffic times, such as in the morning or later in the evening (it’s usually a ghost town in the grocery store at 8pm).
